Practical Help for Victims, Families & Advocates

This section provides trusted information, tools, and links to help you understand your rights, respond to abuse or retaliation, and begin your path to protection and healing.

Know Your Rights

As a Victim, You Have the Right To:

  • Be protected from retaliation or intimidation after reporting abuse
  • Seek restraining orders or emergency protective actions
  • Access trauma-informed therapy, healthcare, and recovery resources
  • Be treated fairly regardless of age, gender, disability, or trauma history
  • Pursue justice — both civil and criminal

As a Parent, Minor, or Guardian, You Have the Right To:

  • Demand safety in schools, homes, institutions, and online
  • Challenge unfair school discipline through due process
  • Report educator negligence, abuse, or discriminatory practices
  • File formal complaints with school boards and state/federal agencies

Disability Protections (ADA/IDEA):

  • Students with disabilities are protected under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • Children and adults are protected from discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) — in schools, courts, hospitals, and workplaces

Step-by-Step Guides

  • Save screenshots, texts, emails, call logs, and online messages
  • Keep a written timeline of events, including dates, names, and witnesses
  • Take timestamped photos or videos (when safe)
  • Save medical, mental health, or school records that show emotional or behavioral changes
  • Use screen-record tools and cloud backups
  • Never delete harmful messages — they may serve as critical evidence
  • Consider saving social media pages as PDFs or full-page screenshots
  • Go to your local courthouse or domestic violence resource center
  • File a petition with documentation (messages, photos, threats)
  • You may be able to file online in some Florida counties
